History of Tanzania Union Day
Introduction
Tanzania Union Day is observed on April 26. It commemorates the union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar in 1964, which created the United Republic that became known as Tanzania. The day celebrates national unity while also drawing attention to the distinctive constitutional relationship between the mainland and Zanzibar.
The union did not merge two identical political systems. Tanganyika and Zanzibar had different colonial histories, independence movements, populations, and institutions. Zanzibar retained its own president, legislature, and authority over non-union matters.
Tanganyika under colonial rule
German East Africa included the territory later known as Tanganyika. After Germany’s defeat in the First World War, Britain administered Tanganyika under League of Nations and later United Nations authority.
The Tanganyika African National Union, led by Julius Nyerere, became the major nationalist movement. Tanganyika gained independence on December 9, 1961, became a republic in 1962, and Nyerere served as president.
Zanzibar and revolution
Zanzibar had long been connected to Indian Ocean trade and was ruled by an Omani Arab dynasty before becoming a British protectorate. Society was shaped by African, Arab, South Asian, and other communities as well as the legacy of slavery and plantation agriculture.
Zanzibar became independent in December 1963 as a constitutional monarchy. On January 12, 1964, a revolution overthrew the sultan’s government. The upheaval involved severe violence, killings, displacement, and persecution, especially affecting Arab and South Asian communities. Abeid Amani Karume emerged as president of the revolutionary government.
The Articles of Union
Nyerere and Karume negotiated a union soon after the revolution. The Articles of Union were signed on April 22, 1964, and the union came into effect on April 26.
The new state was initially called the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. Later in 1964, the name Tanzania was adopted, combining elements of Tanganyika and Zanzibar.
A unique constitutional structure
The union government controls designated union matters such as foreign affairs, defense, citizenship, and currency. Zanzibar retains its own government and House of Representatives for non-union affairs.
This arrangement has created recurring debates about representation, autonomy, finances, constitutional reform, and the exact list of union matters. Union Day therefore carries both celebratory and political meanings.
Nation-building after 1964
Nyerere’s government promoted Swahili, national unity, and African socialism under the policy of Ujamaa. The 1967 Arusha Declaration established a program of public ownership and rural transformation.
Tanzania also supported liberation movements from southern Africa. At the same time, economic hardship, political restrictions, villagization, and one-party government generated serious criticism and long-term consequences.

The day celebrates the endurance of the union, but responsible commemoration also acknowledges the violence surrounding the Zanzibar Revolution and the continuing constitutional debate. Unity in Tanzania has been built through political choices, institutions, language policy, and negotiation rather than through a single uncontested event.
